Advice for people at high risk. Coronavirus (COVID-19)

How to protect yourself if you’re at high risk

If you’re at high risk of getting seriously ill from coronavirus, there are extra things you should do to avoid catching it.

These include:

  • not leaving your home – you should not go out to do shopping, pick up medicine or exercise
  • stay at least 2 metres (3 steps) away from other people in your home as much as possible

Ask friends, family or neighbours to pick up shopping and medicines for you. They should leave them outside your door.

If you need help getting deliveries of essential supplies like food, you can register to get coronavirus support.

Government has identified two groups of people, high risk and very high risk.

  • High risk patients are all those who are 70 years old and over (regardless of their medical condition) and those of any age but with a long term health condition (essentiality all patients who would normally be offered an annual flu vaccination). Those paitient should limit their social interaction to the absolute minimum in order to reduce the transmission of coronavirus.
  • Very High group – patients of any age who are solid organ transplant recipients and people with specific cancers who are undergoing active chemotherapy or radical radiotherapy for lung cancer, people with severe respiratory issues, people on immunosuppression therapies and those who are pregnant with significant heart disease. These groups of patients should follow strict social isolation and not have contact from the outside world for at least 12 weeks.
